Kelsey Grammer is in a hospital near his home on the Big Island of Hawaii recovering from a mild heart attack. His spokesman says he'll be released this week, but that he isn't aware if there's any history of heart trouble. The 53-year-old Grammer had been paddle-boarding on Saturday with his wife when the heart attack symptoms came on.

The huge fire that swept through the Universal Studios backlot Sunday was unintentionally caused by roofing work. L-A County Fire Chief Michael Freeman says the fire began after workers used a blowtorch to heat asphalt shingles to apply to the roof of a building facade on the New York Street.

Jason Statham has just made another high-risk delivery. He's returning as Frank Martin in a third ``Transporter'' movie. Filming finished last month. It's expected in theatres the day before the U-S Thanksgiving.

The main voice actors for ``The Simpsons'' should be able to live comfortably now that they've have a raise. Not that they were starving before. They'll be getting about 400 thousand dollars per episode, up from 350 grand. Production on ``The Simpsons'' had been delayed while the contract was being worked on.

In 1970, Kinks lead singer Ray Davies made an 11-thousand-kilometre round trip from New York to London to change one word on the recording of ``Lola.'' The reference to ``Coca-Cola'' became cherry cola because the BBC bans commercial references in songs.

 

In 1972, the Stones began their ``Exile on Main Street'' tour before 17-thousand fans in Vancouver.

In 1979, Bruce Springsteen, Boz Scaggs and Rickie Lee Jones performed together at the wedding of Springsteen's lighting director.

A lifelong fan of Boston is now the band's new lead singer. While surfing My-Space, Boston found Tommy Decarlo -- a father of two, and former credit manager at Home Depot. Decarlo's daughter had posted her dad singing Boston songs over karaoke tracks. After the suicide of lead singer Brad Delp last year, Boston founder Tom Scholz was looking for a new lead singer. Decarlo says his new gig is surreal.

Yoko Ono has lost her fight to block the use of John Lennon's song ``Imagine'' in a film that challenges the theory of evolution. Lennon's widow had sued the makers of the film ``Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed'' for using a 15-second excerpt of the song without her permission. A judge ruled the filmmakers are protected under the ``fair use'' doctrine, which allows certain uses of small parts of a copyrighted work without the author's permission. The movie opened in April and it will come out on DVD in October. It argues the universe is too complex to be explained by evolution alone.

The remainder of Kurt Cobain’s ashes have been stolen from Courtney Love. The majority of Cobain’s ashes were spread at a New York Buddhist temple and in Washington’s Wishkah River, but Love said she kept a small amount (as well as a lock of his hair) for herself. This isn’t the first time Love has had something of her husband stolen: In March, Love alleged that thieves used Cobain’s social security number to steal several million dollars from his estate. Courtney believes a former friend may be behind both events.

This was inspired by the political changes going on at the time, and was highly critical of the George Bush presidential administration (the first one).

Frank Sampedro, who was in Young's band Crazy Horse, came up with the title when he and Young were watching Chinese protests on TV.

Young used members of his former backing group The Bluenotes to record this.

Young performed this with Pearl Jam at the 1993 MTV Video Music Awards. He would join Pearl Jam on stage from time to time over the next few years. In fact, Pearl Jam has used this as the closing song in many of their concerts.

A backlot fire at Universal Studios yesterday destroyed the King Kong exhibit, a set from ``Back to the Future,'' and the London and New York street scene sets. Thousands of movies and T-V shows were also consumed by the blaze. But studio head Ron Meyer says they have duplicates of everything.

It’s hard to take seriously an awards show that honors Transformers as Best Movie, hands Adam Sandler a lifetime achievement award and has categories like Best Summer Movie So Far, but The MTV Movie Awards did bring together Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. The pair reunited for a “Wayne’s World” segment for the first time in 14 years.

Indiana Jones is no match for the gal pals of ``Sex and the City.'' Sarah Jessica Parker's big-screen take on her hit TV series opened at number-one on the weekend with nearly 56-(m) million dollars in sales. That's the best ever for an R-rated comedy. Indiana Jones drops to second. The fright flick ``The Strangers'' opens in a solid third. ``Iron Man'' and the new ``Narnia'' rounded out the top five.

In 1989, Rolling Stones bass guitarist Bill Wyman, age 52, married 19-year-old Mandy Smith in Bury St. Edmonds, England. The couple divorced in 1991 after Wyman said they'd spent only five days together as man and wife. Wyman agreed to an 800-thousand-dollar divorce settlement.

The Kiss Army fan club has an enthusiastic new recruit: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Rice was in Sweden Thursday for an international conference on Iraq. Kiss had a sold-out concert to play Friday. They happened to be staying at the same hotel so Condy payed a visit to Kiss' executive lounge where they signed autographs and handed out backstage passes and T-shirts to her staff. Rice said, "It was really fun to meet Kiss," noting that they seemed well-informed about current events.

It's a sad day in music. Rock pioneer Bo Diddley has died of heart failure. He was 79. He had suffered a stroke and heart attack last year. The legendary singer and performer was known for his homemade square guitar, dark glasses and black hat. His first single, ``Bo Diddley,'' introduced the world to his signature rhythm ... a sound George Thorogood says is timeless.

On June 17th, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release Deep Purple: Around The World Live, a 4-DVD boxed set chronicling live shows in 1995 India, 1999 Australia and 2002 England. The fourth disc, Access All Areas, is a documentary of the band, from inception on.

This was one of the last songs added to the album. Clapton's record company wanted songs that were more upbeat, so this was included.

The album title comes from the song "Louisiana Blues" by Muddy Waters, which contains the line, "I'm going to New Orleans, baby, behind the sun."

Songwriter Jerry Williams wrote this and 2 other songs on the album.

Clapton's marriage was in bad shape at the time. This is a positive song affirming his love, but many of the songs Clapton wrote on the album, including "Just Like A Prisoner" and "She's Waiting," express his doubts about his marriage.

French fashion house Christian Dior has dropped Sharon Stone from its Chinese advertisements. It also released a statement from the actress apologizing for saying the earthquake that struck China may have been the result of bad `karma' over its treatment of Tibet.

Both Skaters and Jaters will have something to watch in tonight's season finale of ``Lost.'' Skaters are fans of Sawyer and Kate's relationship, Jaters prefer Kate with Jack. Co-creator Damon Lindelof says the episode ``will have a bounty of romantic scenes'' that will satisfy both sets of fans. He says Locke and Jack's conflict will also heat up, and even the concept of time will change.

Ah yes, tonight's “Lost” cliffhanger ... as confusing as ever!

If Harrison Ford can do a fourth Indiana Jones, Eddie Murphy's probably thinking: why not a fourth ``Beverly Hills Cop?'' Reports indicate Murphy has approached Paramount Pictures about reviving the franchise. Filming could start next year and ``Beverly Hills Cop 4'' could be in theaters in 2010.

In 1989, guitarist John Cipollina, a founder of the 1960's San Francisco band Quicksilver Messenger Service, died of emphysema at 45.

In 1992, Procul Harum and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra got together for the first of two reunion concerts. Twenty-one years earlier they had created "Conquistador" together.

In 1997, Tom Cochrane performed a private concert for the students of Burnsview Secondary School in North Delta. The performance honoured the students for their fundraising efforts for World Vision.

Rod Stewart’s tour rider requests that two oxygen tanks are available backstage at every concert. The request was unearthed by promoters at a festival in Norway, who said that the singer wanted “two first aid type oxygen kits”. Stewart’s ’30-page rider’ also asks that he is provided with 48 soccer balls to kick into the crowd and $16,000 worth of food per day for crew.

In addition to their two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden, Pearl Jam will also play New York’s Beacon Theatre July 1st for a private charity event benefiting the Robin Hood organization, which targets poverty in New York. After a minimum $100 donation, fans have access to up to six tickets starting at $250. The event is expected to raise $3 million for the charity.

Rush have donated $100,000 from the sale of tickets to last weekend's Winnipeg concert to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The band also will be selling museum T-shirts at all of the remaining Canadian stops on their Snakes & Arrows Live concert tour, and donating all of the proceeds from those sales to the museum's $105-million private sector fund-raising campaign. Rush are in Vancouver tonight and this weekend you'll have a shot at “Snakes and Arrows – Live.”

Classic Rock Song Facts: (Weekdays at 1:20pm)

This song is about a teacher who lusts after one of his students. Sting was a teacher before joining The Police. After a lot of speculation, Sting denied that this came from any personal experience.

The Police recorded this over a period of months. The song started as a Hammond organ-based soul track then evolved through various complex arrangements, until it was eventually reduced to it's simplest elements.

This won the 1981 Grammy Award for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Group.

The Police reunited in 1986 to record updated versions of some of their old songs. The reunion brought out old hostilities, and this was the only song they completed.

This was featured on Friends in the episode "The One Where Underdog Gets Away." Joey was on a poster for Venereal Disease treatment, and the song was played when they showed all the posters all over New York City.

The most famous whistler on TV has died. Earle Hagen not only whistled the theme to ``The Andy Griffith Show,'' he wrote it, too. Hagen also composed the themes to ``The Dick Van Dyke Show,'' ``The Mod Squad,'' ``Gomer Pyle,'' and won an Emmy for some of the music he wrote for ``I Spy.'' Hagen died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 88.

Milwaukee is getting a permanent reminder of the ``Happy Days'' T-V show. A bronze statue of The Fonz will be dedicated August 19th. Most of the show's stars are expected to be at the ceremony, including The Fonz himself, Henry Winkler, along with Marion Ross, Tom Bosley and the show's creator, Garry Marshall.

Don't expect to hear off-colour jokes on ``Last Comic Standing.'' Bill Bellamy, who's hosting the show again, says ``blue, on NBC? No, no blue.'' Bellamy says comics who compete on ``Last Comic Standing'' have to be on their best behaviour. He says ``doing jokes on NBC is like being at your mama's house on Thanksgiving. You can't say that at the table.'' ``Last Comic Standing'' airs Thursday nights.

U2 frontman Bono has received an honorary degree for his contribution to music and humanitarian causes from Keio University in Japan. Bono is in Japan to attend the fourth Tokyo International conference on Africa Development. The U2 singer urged students not to ignore Africa ahead of the G8 summit in July.

The original members of Simple Minds will work together for the first time in 27 years when they enter a recording studio next month. The week-long reformation will see the work on at least two new tracks.

A new Doors documentary is in the works. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek calls the still-untitled project "the anti-Oliver Stone," that in contrast to the director's 1991 biopic of the band, quote, "this film will be the true story of The Doors." He also promises that the upcoming movie will include lots of rare footage, noting that making use of the vintage clips is "the whole point" of the project.

Oscar-winning director Sydney Pollack has died of cancer at his home in Los Angeles. Pollack won Oscars for directing and producing ``Out of Africa'' with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford, and received an Oscar nomination this year for producing ``Michael Clayton.'' Pollack also acted on screen as George Clooney's boss. Sydney Pollack was 73.

Oscar-nominated First Nations actor Graham Greene will receive an honorary doctorate from Wilfrid Laurier University next month. Greene has a long list of TV and movie credits and was nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Kicking Bird in the 1990 film "Dances With Wolves."

Indy is back. And Bourne will be back for 4. Producers confirms a fourth thriller about amnesiac spy Jason Bourne is in the works with Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass expected to return for more lightning-paced mayhem.

Kelsey Grammer has rebounded quickly from ``Back to You.'' Variety says he's been cast in a new comedy pilot that ABC is considering. It's called ``Roman's Empire'' and is produced by Ashton Kutcher's company. It's based on a British series about a guy who has broken up with his girlfriend but can't get away from her wealthy family. Grammer plays an eccentric billionaire.

Sammy Hagar has a new supergroup ... code-named “Chickenfoot.” Hagar has teamed with acclaimed guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith, and former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony. The group will enter the recording studio just before Labour Day.

To mark twenty years of Smashing Pumpkins, Billy Corgan and company will play anniversary shows this August and September. No word on Canadian dates at this point.

Paul McCartney can now add one more honor to the numerous awards, accolades, and the knighthood he has received. Sir Paul was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Yale University. Yale said McCartney awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock, roll, rhythm, and blues. A band played "Hey Jude" as McCartney walked on stage to accept the honorary degree.
