March 28th - Coog with Ian Astbury of The Cult Print E-mail

Every now and again we get thrust into unique situations, like interviewing Ian Astbury, lead vocalist and  one half of the creative force behind The Cult! It was a wonderful experience. Here are a few highlights from our conversation:

Some people may be surprised to learn that Ian Astbury has quite a connection to Canada.

When Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek of The Doors went out on tour a few years back, they asked Ian to join them on vocals. What did Astbury learn personally and/or professionally through that experience?

Having grown up in both Glasgow Scotland (Celtic/Rangers) and also Liverpool England (Liverpool/Everton) ... I couldn't help but ask where his soccer loyalty lies!

The Cult recorded their latest album "Born Into This" in just over a month. Astbury describes the creative process and how he approaches the Classics.

As a youth Ian Astbury was heavily influenced, and eventually heavily entrenched, in the Punk movement. But are there elements of the Punk culture that remain with him today?

Special thanks to Penny in our promotions department for setting up the interview. Hope you enjoyed it. I certainly did!!

Entertainment News This Morning: (Weekdays at 10:20am)

Trace Adkins got canned and former British tabloid editor Piers Morgan got crowned the winner on ``The Celebrity Apprentice.'' On last night's season finale, the guys' final task was to hold a grand charity event. Adkins was in charge of taking care of the talent, The Backstreet Boys, while Morgan was responsible for the auction and food. Morgan's team raised more money than Adkins, while Adkins' team sold more tickets. Here's Trump making the announcement by first addressing Trace Adkins.

Trump said Morgan ultimately ``did an amazing job and beat the hell out of everybody.'' Piers Morgan's charity is the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund which provides help for families of United States military personnel lost in the line of duty. Morgan's brother has fought in two tours of duty in Iraq and his brother-in-law has fought in two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Some truth about the upcoming ``X-Files'' movie is being thrown out there. Producers say the sprawling alien mythology from the TV show is not part of the movie's plot. But, ``X-Files'' creator Chris Carter says there is a reference to Dana Scully's seemingly supernatural son, William, who was born in season eight and later given up for adoption. The new ``X-Files'' movie will be in theatres July 25th.

Classic Rock Calender: (Weekdays at 11:20am)

In 1964, the Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love,'' debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 28 before topping the chart the very next week. That's the fastest rise to number-one in the chart's history.

Also on this date in 1964, Madame Tussaud's in London announced the Beatles would be the first pop stars to be cast in wax.

In 1976, Genesis opened its first North American tour with Phil Collins as lead vocalist, in Buffalo.

In 1990, drummer Steven Adler, a founding member of Guns N' Roses, was booted out of the group.

In 1992, Ozzy Osbourne and several fans suffered cuts and bruises after about 600 people rushed the stage during a concert in Irvine, California.

In 1996, Phil Collins announced he was leaving Genesis after 25 years. He has since returned.

Classic Rock Song Facts: (Weekdays at 1:20pm)

When lead vocalist Bon Scott introduced this song at concerts he would say half-jokingly that it was about lead guitarist Angus Young. But Angus himself said, "I wasn't really a bad sort of kid."

The song was written by Malcolm Young, Angus Young and Bon Scott.

It is ... Problem Child ... AC/DC.

Entertainment News This Morning: (Weekdays at 10:20am)

``American Idol'' won't have a reason to say ``Chikezie Eze'' any more. Chikezie was kicked off the show last night. Syesha Mercado and Jason Castro were the other lowest vote-getters. Meanwhile, Ryan Seacrest says ``Idol'' will not let tracks by the contestants on iTunes count toward the iTunes best-seller chart because it would affect the competition, but if it was allowed, tracks by ``Idol'' finalists would probably take the top five positions. Finally, contrary to reports, Carly Smithson is not pregnant.

Also ... American Idol judge Paula Abdul will kick off NBC's ``Today Show” outdoor concert series on April 25th.

Robin Williams' marriage is falling apart. His wife, Marsha Garces Williams, filed for divorce in San Francisco Friday, citing irreconcilable differences. They've been married nearly 19 years. They met when Garces Williams was a nanny for Zachary, Williams' son from a previous marriage. The Williams also have two children, Zelda and Cody.

And then there was two. Trace Adkins and Piers Morgan battle for the title of “Celebrity Apprentice” tonight on NBC. CBS has March Madness basketball so “Survivor” returns next Thursday.

Classic Rock Calender: (Weekdays at 11:20am)

Those born on March 27th share a birthdate with Genesis keyboards player Tony Banks (1950) and Andrew Farriss from INXS (1959).

In 1967, the Rolling Stones were pelted with bottles, chairs and fireworks during a concert in Sweden.

The Drive Nooner - Random Rock News: (Weekdays at 12:10pm)

Bon Jovi axeman, Richie Sambora, could be criminally charged with child endangerment. Richie Sambora was busted for DUI with 10-year-old daughter Ava in the car, along with another juvenile and another adult -- a woman. If Sambora was driving drunk, he could be charged with endangering the two kids. Sambora has not been charged with endangerment but the Laguna Beach P.D. is "actively investigating."

The Rolling Stones have been permitted to play Blackpool, England after the city’s council lifted a forty-four year ban. The Stones were originally banned when fifty people were hospitalized after riots broke out during a 1964 gig. The incident allegedly happened when a man tried to spit at Brian Jones. Keith Richards warned the man against it and then proceeded to kick him in the face before a mass brawl broke out, with the band swiftly exiting the stage.

Dr Pepper claims it will give everyone in America a free can of Dr. Pepper if Axl Rose releases his ``Chinese Democracy'' album in 2008. Well, everyone except ex-GnR guitarists Slash and Buckethead.

A Dr Pepper spokesman compares the effort it took to create Dr Pepper with Axl's 17-year effort to make the album, and he says once ``Chinese Democracy'' is released, ``People will refer to it as 'Dr Pepper for the ears.''

Classic Rock Song Facts: (Weekdays at 1:20pm)

This was written and originally recorded by Blues great Robert Johnson.

Led Zeppelin first played this for a BBC session in 1969, but the song was never released on an album. It was placed on the Box Set in 1990, and it was also made a bonus track on the Coda album for the Complete Studio Recordings.

Jimmy Page used a 12-string acoustic guitar to play this song.

The lyric, "I've had no lovin' since my baby been gone" came from B.B. King's "Woke Up This Morning (My Baby Was Gone)."

It is ... Traveling Riverside Blues ... Led Zeppelin.
