  • River Safety
    The Regional District of Fraser Fort George is asking residents to be extra cautious around open water this long weekend. Manager of External Affairs Renee McCloskey says the warmer weather may bring high water in some places. pgtvnews/051608McLoskey McCloskey says, with spring runoff, there may well be debris in the water that's not visible at the surface.

  • Regional District Rejects Mutual Aid
    The Fraser- Fort George Regional District Board voted against the idea of a region-wide mutual aid agreement among fire departments at its regular meeting yesterday. A number of directors cited concerns about depleting one department to serve another ,as well as issues with liability .

    Terrane Metals has received a vote of confidence from its largest shareholder. Gold Corp has gone over the Mt. Milligan mining project north of Prince George. And it's Board of Directors has given Terrane Metals approval to purchase some of the equipment needed for the project.

    RCMP in Prince George have good reason to celebrate. Not only is this national police week, but the latest statistics reveal a steep reduction in the Prince George crime rate.

  • Colin Hansen on forestry program
    B.C.'s Economic Development Minister is throwing cold water on a claim by the NDP concerning the program helping displaced forestry workers. Here's the minister, Colin Hansen: pgtvnews/051508Hansen Hansen says forestry-dependent families facing layoff are going through enough without having to deal with fearmongering by the NDP. He says if workers are planning to take part in the provincial tuition assistance program they should notify the E.I. office. But again Hansen says that would not compromise their E-I benefits.

  • Stabbing update
    A 45 year old city man has been charged with attempted murder, assault causing bodily harm and aggravated assault after a stabbing in the city last night. John Gordon Goudreau appeared in court here today. Police say the accused was working as a cabbie when the stabbing occured. Witnesses say a confrontation developed between Goudreau and a pedestrian. One witness said the cabbie used his vehicle to try and hit the pedestrian no less than three times. The pedestrian is said to have approached the cabbie before falling to the ground with a serious throat injury. This all happened at about 9:20 Wednesday night at Third and George. The 46 year old victim underwent emergency surgery and his still hospitalized in intensive care.

  • Weekend camping spots
    Mother nature is continuting to put a damper on campers who were hoping to head north for the Victoria Day long weekend. Provincial campgrounds at Whiskers Point and Carp Lake remain closed because of snow while Crooked River is closed for construction work. There is still some ice on Purden Lake but the campground is open and the ice could be gone by the end of the weekend with the warm temperatures. Campgrounds to the west including Sowchea Bay and Paarens Beach are open and the lakes are clear. All provincial campgrounds south are fully opertional.

  • Police week in Canada
    Police officials across the country are being recognized this week as part of National Police Week. Here in Prince George, Inspector Kirke Hopkins says local officers have to contend with many different types of calls. pgtvnews/051508police Hopkins says so far this year, there's been more than 20 assaults on local officers... last year there were over 50.

  • Weigh scale delay
    At the request of bidders the Transportation Ministry has delayed, by two weeks, the deadline for submitting bids for construction of a new weigh scale just south of Red Rock. Spokesperson Jeff Knight confirms the new deadline is now May 22nd. He expects the tender award for the $ 25 million project would then go out in early June. The new facility would replace the south scale located at the entrance of the B.C.R. Industrial Park. Knight says work on the project would likely begin very quickly after the tender award. Earlier a two-year delay was announced for the scale's construction. At the time Ministry officials said that delay would not change the final price tag for the work.

  • Highway 97 Project
    With a bid of almost 4.5 million-dollars, Green Roads Recycling has been awarded a contract to resurface a section of Highway 97. Green Roads Recycling, located in Fernie, will begin the project in June. It involves resurfacing 15 kilometres of Highway 97 between the Salmon River Bridge and O'Dell Road, and 33.8 km north of TallusRoad to Red Rocky Creek. The project will include using a combination of hot-in-place asphalt recycling and admix.

  • Nursing Funding
    The province has earmarked 15 million dollars into recruiting and training nurses in BC. Though the specifics of how the funding will be spent are different, the Chief Nursing Officer for Northern Health Suzanne Johnston outlines how the funding has been used in the past. pgtvnews/051508johnston Johnston says many practicing nurses will be retiring soon and this kind of investment is critical.

  • Prince George and Cariboo Fire Centre Updates
    Prince George and Cariboo Fire officials are reminding area residents to be vigilant with campfires and open burning this long weekend and throughout the forest fire season . Prince George Fire Information Officer Jill Chimko . pgtvnews/051508chimko The majority of the 31 fires in the Prince George centre to date were caused by escaped open burns. And all of the 23 fires in the Cariboo centre this year were person-caused. While the fire danger rating for both centres is currently low to moderate for the most part, warmer dry conditions in the forecast can quickly change that .

  • Stabbing In The Downtown
    The intersection of 3rd and George was the scene of a stabbing just before 9:30 last night . The 45 year old male victim needed emergency surgery for a wound to the neck . He's currently listed as stable . A 44 year old city man was arrested a short time later and is expected to make a court appearance today . Police are continuing to investigate.

  • Sports Centre Summer (VIDEO)
    With the warmer weather finally here, you might think it will mean a slow down at the Northern Sport Centre. Those that operate the giant indoor comples say the schedule is filling up quickly. And they're hopeful a professional team will use the complex next spring.

  • OBAC Mining (VIDEO)
    The Omineca Beetle Action Coalition has released its Minerals and Mining Sector Strategy. It's one of 12 strategies OBAC is committed to completing. The strategy sets out what needs to be done, to make the region from Mackenzie to Terrace attractive to the industry.
